I’m very excited to share this article in Sunset Magazine by Thomas J. Story (@sunsetphoto) and Clark Miller (@clarkwilliammiller), retelling their local camping trip to Mount Diablo State Park with Kámen Road’s collaborative partner and award-winning author Obi Kaufmann. It was great to see the Coyote Thunder Field Bag on Obi’s shoulder, carrying all the tools that he needs for his work in California’s “generous” wilderness.

The Coyote Thunder Field Bag was a collaborative project that took over a year to complete. Our design work together started after I contacted Obi to figure out a way to share his art after reading the first line of his book – The California Field Atlas: “This is a love story.” I had to buy the book because of the beautiful watercolors and maps of California’s wilderness. I also could relate to being born here in a suburban development that took over the beautiful fruit orchards of Santa Clara Valley. It still shakes me when I remember how quickly the land disappeared.

Nature still drives me and reveals what is possible. I had when I was young and still have to this day a wild hidden gem in my own backyard. That gem is Alum Rock Park in East San Jose. The trails, trees, creek, and rocks of Alum Rock shaped me like Mount Diablo State Park did for Obi Kaufmann.

What is your special place in nature – “in your own backyard” – that you visit? What is the place that continues to inspire you and teach you? What is the place that you would work hard to care for and protect? If you want to write about it, contact us!
